Auto Insurance for Married Couples
By Jorge Hiram Garcia, Your Insurance Advisor | April 5, 2010
A common mistake many young families make when buying auto insurance is to list the policy only under one name – usually the husband’s name. This type of mistake can lead to serious gaps in your auto insurance coverage under certain circumstances. While none of us like to think that our relationships will end, we all know that they do. An unnamed spouse, in this instance may soon find that not being listed on the policy may leave them out in the cold in case a claim should become necessary.
While an unnamed spouse has automatic coverage during the time he or she lives in the household, if that spouse decides to move out due to a separation, then that coverage may be in jeopardy. This problem may even occur while as a named insured on the policy, so make sure you read the policy carefully before making any decisions that may affect your auto insurance protection and coverage.
Many auto insurance policies state that the unnamed spouse that does not live in the covered or insured household may have coverage only of they have “permission” by the head of household, or the named insured on the auto policy to use the vehicle on question. While this part of the auto insurance policy might not create problems under normal circumstances, it may become an issue if there is a messy separation or pending divorce.
Another good reason not to be left off of the auto insurance policy is that the unnamed spouse will not receive notice if the policy is canceled, changed or lapses due to non-payment. Another good reason to be named as an insured on the auto insurance policy is that in case a claimed is covered by the insurance company, the check will only be made out to the named insured. Again, under normal circumstances this situation might not be a serious problem, but in case there are marital difficulties, it can pose a significant challenge for one or both of the spouses involved.
If you are married, do make sure that all insurance policies that you buy to protect yourself from loss or damage includes both spouses. Have you run across any problems with an auto insurance policy that was caused by not having your name on the insurance policy? Write back and share your experience with me.
