What’s the best way to shop for health insurance?

By | April 13, 2010

Recently, a friend asked me what I thought was the best way to go about buying major medical health insurance for his family. He received coverage from his employer, but to cover his wife and children with the same plan was quite expensive.

I advised him to look at an individual and family major medical health insurance plan for his spouse and children. It turned out to be much less expensive this way, but it did require a little bit more work. However, following my suggestion to do his shopping online, he was able to find coverage easily and quickly, and saved quite a bit of money, too, over his employer sponsored plan.

There are three basic ways to shop for individual and family major medical health insurance coverage.

  1. Call insurance companies directly
  2. Call a local agent
  3. Shop online

The cost to buy individual and family major medical health insurance is the same regardless of which method you use. State laws require individual and family major medical health insurance carriers to prohibit insurance companies, insurance agents or insurance brokers to discount individual and family major medical health insurance rates, or offer discounts on individual and family major medical health insurance policies. State laws also prohibit major medical health insurance carriers, insurance agents and insurance brokers from rebating. So, regardless of who you call, or where you buy your individual and family major medical health insurance policy, the cost will be the same. For that reason, many people prefer to shop online. Shopping online for individual and family major medical health insurance coverage is far more convenient and easy to do.

The Internet also allows online shoppers to research, and look up additional information, such as which doctors, hospitals and medical providers accept the major medical health insurance plans your are considering, or currently shopping.

How easy and convenient is it really? Well, take a look…
